What is Polygon?
Polygon Network is an Ethereum-based interoperability solution for Ethereum-compatible chains. The problem is, even though there are scaling solutions on Ethereum, they cannot communicate with each other properly. This is the challenge Polygon sets out to solve.
To enable faster transactions and lower gas costs, Polygon leverages the Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm. Ethereum is only used for finality and communication between Polygon chains, and the main bulk of operations happens on Polygon.Polygon started out as Matic Network, a L2 scaling solution for Ethereum. However, along the way developers realized that there needs not be one single scaling solution. Instead, they set out to incorporate all of them into a single system and make it more approachable for use and development. This is why in 2021 they rebranded to Polygon.
